RD: Brighton Reflection

What went well:

  • I think we managed to try a whole range of shots including: track, pan, handicam, zoom.
  • We accomplished a lot in the time, we weren't in Brighton for a very long time but we came back with a large amount of footage.
  • We practiced some shots which we are hoping to do of similar type in our final piece. We managed to do still shots of people cartwheeling which will be very helpful when we practice editing of manipulating this type of footage. We also did a lot of shots of people walking which we think could be the opening of our final piece.
  • We definitely got some interesting landscape shots, which before I have thought are quite boring but in the right location these can definitely be made useful.
  • The trip also gave us a lot of practice working as a team and shooting for a deadline which are both going to be very important when it comes to our final production.

What didn't go well:

  • I think we realized we would probably not be comfortable using strangers in our video as we had great trouble asking people to be in our film.
  • It was also very hard to try and film with no storyboard or plan.
  • It was also hard to film and be in it with only 2 group members, so we will definitely need to recruit cast to be in our final piece.
  • Now were back to editing it is very hard to make sense of loads of quite random clips to fit into a music video, this emphasizes the point that filming without a plan is almost useless.
  • I think Brighton was not the right location for us because the majority of our final piece will be inside so the outside location was quite hard to deal with as the light and people in it are unpredictable and uncontrollable.

What we learned:

  • We learned from this trip that we would definitely use a predominately inside location for our final piece.
  • We will need to have a very detailed plan and shot list when we do our final piece.
  • Have a set cast for our final piece.
All together I think it was a very successful and useful trip and gave us useful practice for our final piece.
